How To Calculate IELTS Band Scores

How to calculated IELTS Band Scores
How to calculated IELTS Band Scores

Both the Academic and General Training IELTS tests use a 9-band grading system. You will be given a band score from 1 to 9 for each component of the test (Writing, Reading, Listening, and Speaking). Your overall IELTS band score is calculated as the average of these two scores. This can be a full score (e.g. 7, 7.5) or a half score (e.g. 6.5, 8.5). Each ability (hearing, reading, writing, and speaking) will receive a band score, as well as an overall band score. The average of all the skills is used to calculate the overall band score. As an example, look at the table below.

Listening Reading Writing Speaking Overall Band
7.0 8.0 8.0 7.5 7.5

Overall test results are calculated to the closest 0.5 or whole band score, as specified on the IELTS website. This implies that if your final result isn't a perfect 7.5 (as given in the table above), your score will be rounded up or down to the nearest whole or half score, whichever is closest. Following are some instances of how this works in IELTS:

  • If your overall score is 6.1, it will be reduced to 6. This is the score that comes closest to a whole band score. To put it another way, 6.1 is closer to band 6 than it is to band 6.5.
  • Your final result will be band 7 if your overall score is assessed to be 6.85. This is due to the fact that 6.85 is closer to band 7 than band 6.5.
  • Your score will be boosted to 6.5 if your total score is an average of 6.25. Because the score of 6.25 falls exactly between bands 6 and 6.5, IELTS will round it up to the nearest score of 6.5.
  • Your score will be increased to 7 if your total score is an average of 6.75. This score falls exactly between band 6.5 and band 7. Your score will be rounded up to band 7 in this situation.
As you can see in the example above, your score is rounded up or down to the nearest 0.5 or full number. This information is available on the official British Council IELTS website and if you have some confused about IELTS Test you can read Frequently Asked Question About IELTS. To make it easier for prospective participants to calculate scores for all IELTS, we have created a IELTS Band score calculator tool to calculate IELTS Listening, Reading, and Speaking so that you can estimate the IELTS score you will get.
